On 5–6 May, the Gipuzkoa School of Engineering at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) hosted an international meeting of our COST Action EU-PoTaRCh.
The meeting brought together members of the Action to exchange knowledge, discuss ongoing work, and strengthen collaboration across working groups all together to achieve our deliverables.
Over two days, the programme combined scientific sessions with place-based experiences in unique locations such as Pasaia and ALBAOLA. These activities highlighted not only research excellence, but also the strong connection between scientific knowledge, territory, heritage, craftsmanship, and knowledge transfer.
On the second day of the meeting, participants visited the shipyard, where they had the opportunity to observe the construction of a traditional ship replica. One of the highlights of the visit was learning about the use of wood tar as a traditional method of wood protection. This provided a perfect example of how historical knowledge, materials, and craftsmanship can remain relevant today.
The visit offered an inspiring opportunity to connect heritage, materials, and practice within the spirit of EU-PoTaRCh, while bringing research closer to society and strengthening international cooperation.
