Workshop „Presentation of PoTarCh technologies to tourists and general public with a specifal focus on experimental tar making” was organised by the Institute of Ethnology CAS in cooperation with other institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Archaeological Institute Prague, Archaeological Institute Brno, Institute of Nuclear Physics) and partners from non-profit organisations. Researchers and science popularisers from Greece, Turkey, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Poland and the Netherlands gathered at the Historical craft education centre at Šelmbek Castle in central Bohemia. The three-day programme included presentations focusing on the history of PoTarCh technologies, its current transformations and heritization and experimental reconstruction, as well as practical experiments with various methods of tar production. From very simple Palaeolithic techniques to Neolithic and medieval technologies of tar production in vessels, to the construction and operation of a replica of a double-shell tar kiln. The workshop also included demonstrations of the technologies to tourists and visitors to the Historical craft education centre, during which participants discussed how to effectively make extinct technologies and intangible heritage accessible to the general public. The tar samples produced during the experiments will be further analysed and will serve as reference samples for historical tar finds.
Stay tuned for next workshop possibilities
