COST Action CA22155 – Network for forest by-products charcoal, resin, tar, potash

Working Group 3 (Archaeology) held a workshop on 2 and 3 July 2024 in Brussels, at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and the Sonian forest.

During the first day, ongoing and future projects and activities were discussed, such as the development of a database on archaeological sites of Potarch production, the writing of review papers on charcoal and tar production sites in Europe and the organization of a summer school in 2025.

The second day, an excursion was held in the Sonian forest, an old growth beech forest and UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the excursion, both archaeological remains of (post)medieval charcoal production and early medieval iron production were visited.
